  • Conduct thorough assessment to clarify the nature of the problem.

  • Identify cultural, religious and social factors that shape a person's personality and contribute to an existing problem.

  • Explore biological and environmental factors that influence the way one manages and perceives the world.

  • Recognize troublesome defenses and repeated patterns of distress.

  • Offer support, empathy, insight and guidance in learning how to reduce anxiety, express feelings and increase awareness of buried anger, resentment and hurt.

  • Acquire new skills to address, re-frame and process those feelings so they don't negatively impact your mental health or hinder your ability to interact with others.

  • Re-orient perceptions in an effort to more successfully negotiate problematic interactions or stressful situations - individually and then sometimes jointly.

  • Predict possible future pitfalls, develop realistic expectations of self and others. Understand your capacity to manage stress and/or interpersonal interactions and act accordingly. Know your limitations and strengths.
